I do have Norton installed on my mac, however, since i cant reboot with the norton cd (its got 10.1 on it, and it causes kernel panics when it tries to boot, so i have to boot into OS 9) would it be recommended to uninstall it? are most of the features of norton in techtool pro and diskwarrior?
Yes, and better. I stopped using Norton back in OS 8 days when Their Speed Disk started trashing Mac OS drives. Symantec has been slowly dropping support for Mac OS since around that time frame. In fact, I think they announced earlier this year that they were getting out of the Mac utilities business; don't know what the status of their "anti-virus" product is now.
To answer several questions at once:
Q. What's wrong with Norton Utilities?
A. Nothing, really, except for their system-level installs of "preventative" tools which have a LONG history of being more problematic than the problems they supposedly prevent. On my own machines, installs of NU's "helper" extensions cause kernel panics, lost data, corrupted directories and more. The actual APPLICATIONS (Disk Doctor, Speed Tools, UnErase et al) don't seem to have that many problems and are generally OK to use. For this reason, I suggest that you run Norton Utilities off the CD rather than installing them and their system-level, problematic "helpers" into your OS.
Q. What's the status of Norton Utilities?
A. Symantec will continue to sell NU as long as it works with the current version of OS X. They do not plan to upgrade the product any further. For this reason, I've been advising people to look into buying a SUPPORTED disk utility product for their future needs, such as Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro or (ideally) both.
Q. What about Norton Anti-Virus?
A. Oddly enough, Symantec is going full steam ahead with NAV, despite the fact that there are no real viruses for OS X but a real need for competition in the disk-utility area. <shrug> NAV will continue to be sold and updated/supported for OS X for the foreseeable future.
