As far as going to OS X, you can get it cheaper, if you don't mind not having a fancy box, at www.macsales.com (Other World Computing). They are great, I got OS 9 and OS X 10.1 from them about 6 months ago, for about 50 bucks. I resently got the Jaguar upgrade from them for , I think 65.00 dollars. Check 'em out.
IMHO. *don't* buy any version of OS X below Panther if you want to use Gmail. Gmail won't even work with the OS X 10.2.8 version of the Safari browser.
Panther will become cheaper but with the fact that Tiger won't run on any mac below 600 MHz, it might not be rock bottom price wise for a while. If you're a student, educator, or government employee, I think Panther is available for $69. Sometimes on ebay you can get lucky, too.
We might end up using Panther for our older machines and/or some version of Linux from now on.
