Can iTunes import audio from a DVD-RW or DVD-R?

Yes, if the audio is in the same format as a CD. Yours won't be, but you can still import it indirectly. Read on.

Here is the story. Several years ago I made a compilation tape of
Christmas songs, and due to the length, I dubbed it on to a VHS tape.

I did that with my three-hour radio show back in the day, since no cassette could handle that much time. A *lot* of people forget that VHS stereo machines make nice LOOOOONG audio tapes -- up to eight hours of music!

I have VHS/DVD recorder and would like to dub the songs onto a DVD-RW
or DVD-R. That brought up ways to get the music into iTunes.

If iTunes can't do it, what other options are there?

The way you're talking about copying the songs is what I would call "analog" -- the songs will be imported onto the DVD as one LOOONG track.

What you could do is skip the DVD at this stage and plug the machine's audio into your Mac (what model?) via a Griffin iMic (recommended) or directly into the microphone port (not recommended) and feed the audio into a program that will automatically separate the songs out based on the silence between tracks. Many OS X audio programs will do this, but I might suggest AudioRecorder (which I think is freeware) or Griffin's own Final Vinyl (comes with the iMic) or Toast's Spin Doctor (comes with Toast) for the job. There's even a way to make Audio Hijack Pro ($37) do it.

What you'll end up with is x number of AIFF files (unless you use AHPro, which can do MP3 on the fly) on your hard drive. You can then clean em up/edit them if you wish, and then drag them into iTunes and they'll import like normal (you'll need to add the identification info by hand, sorry).

Then, if your Mac can burn DVDs, you can use either iTunes or Toast to burn an Audio DVD of them.
