Hi iMacers, eMacers:
In an effort to upgrade my 1GHz Flat Panel iMac's (OS X 10.3.6) 256MB RAM (upper slot), the week before last I ordered a 512MB 200-Pin DDR PC2100 SODIMM from Crucial.com for the lower slot. Well I received it on Tuesday 11/23 and installed it on Wednesday 11/24. After the install on Wednesday and Thursday all was well.
On Friday 11/26 I booted the iMac to find that my built-in display remained black although the Mac chimed at startup, the fan was running and the internal hard drive could be heard operating. Did a forced shut down.
Disconnected all USB, Firewire, Ethernet, speaker and telephone cables. Only keyboard and mouse remained connected. Tried to startup again with the same results as above. Did a forced shut down.
Tried booting from the Apple Hardware Test CD. No discernable difference. Did a forced shut down.
Tried booting and zapping the PRAM. No discernable difference. Did a forced shut down.
Tried booting into safe mode. No discernable difference. Did a forced shut down.
Removed the stick of 512MB RAM. Tried booting without the extra RAM. Display is working again. Shut down.
Reinstalled the suspect stick of RAM. Tried booting, boot is successful and display continues to work. Shut down.
Tried booting from the Apple Hardware Test CD. It booted into OpenFirmware with the following message:
Invalid memory access at %SRR0: ae0c0108 %SRR1: 0c01086f
Apple PowerMac6,1 4.5.9f1 BootROM built on 02/18/03 at 18:58:03
Welcome to OpenFirmware, the system time and date is: 01:55:23 11/27/2004
To continue booting, type "mac-boot" and press return. To shut down, type "shut-down" and press return.
ok 0>_
I tried to continue booting by typing mac-boot and got the following message:
Invalid memory access at %SRR0: f7a00108 %SRR1: a0010870
So, then I typed shut-down and it shut down.
I tried to run the Apple Hardware Test a second time and got the first part of the above message again. The error was exactly the same. So, I again typed shut-down and it shut down.
Removed the stick of 512MB RAM again. Tried booting without the RAM, boot is successful and display continues to work. Shut down.
With the stick of 512MB RAM still removed I booted from the Apple Hardware Test CD and ran the Extended Test. Passed all tests including memory tests. Shut down. I then booted from the AppleCare Protection Plan CD and ran TechTool Deluxe 3.0.3. Passed all tests including memory tests.
So, I packaged up the stick of 512MB RAM, got an RMA from Crucial, and it's on it's way back to them.
After the removal on Friday and throughout Saturday and Sunday all was well.
This morning I boot the iMac to find that once again my display has remained black although the Mac chimed at startup, the fan was running and the internal hard drive could be heard operating. Did a forced shut down.
Tried booting again. No discernable difference. Did a forced shut down.
Unplugged it from the surge suppressor for a couple minutes. Tried booting again. No discernable difference. Did a forced shut down.
Tried booting using Option-Command-Shift-Delete to see if it would boot from the LaCie D2 Fire Wire hard drive. It seemed to boot from the LaCie but there was no discernable difference in the display. Did a forced shut down.
Unplugged the Ethernet cable that connects it to the Farallon EtherMac iPrint Adapter. Tried booting again. No discernable difference. Did a forced shut down.
Unplugged the USB cable from the Canon CanoScan LiDE 80 scanner (Ethernet still unplugged). Tried booting. Display is working again. Shut down.
Plugged the USB cable from the scanner back in (Ethernet still unplugged). Tried booting. Display continues working. Shut down.
Left the Ethernet cable unplugged, unplugged the scanner's USB cable, the LaCie's Fire Wire cable and the telephone cable. Booted from the Apple Hardware Test CD and ran the Extended Test. Passed all tests including memory tests. Shut down. Booted from the AppleCare CD and ran TechTool Deluxe 3.0.3. Passed all tests including memory tests. Shut down. Booted from my Panther CD and ran Disk Utility, everything checks out. Shut down. Re-connected all cables. Booted. All is well again.
So, does anyone have any idea what's going on here?
