Okay, my GUESS would be that you didn't do a PRAM reset or a PMU reset after removing the suspect RAM. It's not always needed, but I've noticed that whenever you make modifications to the hardware of a Mac, it's not a bad idea to at least reset the PRAM, and possibly reset the motherboard (PMU) to avoid "false symptoms" syndrome.
Strictly a guess, however.
Nope, didn't do either after removing the RAM. Yesterday and today's startup went off without a hitch, hopefully it will stay that way. Outside of this problem this iMac has been absolutely flawless for the 13 months I've had it. If it does recur I'll try the above suggestions before calling AppleCare. Thanks.
