None of them show the desktop so that I can access the MacAlly Firewire Updater application. While I can boot up into OS 9, I don't think that I can run the updater in it. Not at all. You have many options available to you:
1. Downgrade to 10.3.0. Install it on your HD (don't erase the HD). Boot up from it, install the firmware update, once you've got the other drive working, download and install the combo 10.3.6 update from Apple.
2. Borrow the external HD of a friend who has an older version of OS X on their drive. Plug your new external into either the other FW port on your machine or the extra FW port on their external drive. Boot up from their drive, install the firmware on your drive, shut down and disconnect their drive.
3. Use BootCD on someone else's Mac to create your own bootable OS X CD that has the firmware update on it. Booting takes a LOOOOONG time doing it this way, but it does work and gives you a desktop.
That's a few suggestions. I'll bet you can think of a few others, admittedly most of them involve the help of others but hey, that's what your local MUG is for!! :)
