As I have completely migrated to OS X I am a little stumped by

One of the iMacs will not connect to the Internet.

The settings are the same as for the others; "Ethernet" "DHCP" etc.
but the subnet mask shows up as 255.255.0.0 instead of
255.255.255.0 and the IP address is 169.x.x.x. which I understand
means that it is not connected to the Internet.

What can affect this ?

I did a completely fresh install after reformat and all.

I have restarted and restarted, connected, disconnected...

It means the iMac isn't connecting with the DHCP server, likely the router. Check the switch / hub at the other end of the cable and make sure you are seeing a link light. If so then try using a cable connected to a known working computer (moving the iMac if needed.) This will tell you if it's the cable or the computer.
