I considered going for the original over Extreme (I assume both plug into the G5 ok?)

No, not at all. You HAVE to have an Airport Extreme card. They use a completely different slot to Airport that the G5 simply won't have. The only machines that have Airport are G3 iMacs, G3 PowerBooks, G3 iBooks and the early G4 iMacs, G4 PowerBooks, G4 Powermacs and G4 iBooks.

But I noticed the older cards go for about as much, if not *more* than Extreme
cards.

Is there something magical about them? I recall reading some bit about
802.11g butting heads with some cordless phone frequencies, but given
Extreme supports 802.11b, there must be some other reason for the older
card's continued demand?

Apple don't make them anymore. ;)
