I've been toying with the thought of picking up an Airport card, even
though I really have nothing to network the iMac with. But in the past

tapped into some wireless goodness, and could see such happening again
every now & then.

So I've been browsing eBay listings, and to save a few bucks (aside from
lowball bidding...even if I don't win, no big deal) I considered going for
the original over Extreme (I assume both plug into the G5 ok?) But I
noticed the older cards go for about as much, if not *more* than Extreme
cards.

Is there something magical about them? I recall reading some bit about
802.11g butting heads with some cordless phone frequencies, but given
Extreme supports 802.11b, there must be some other reason for the older
card's continued demand?

I'm pretty sure your G5 uses an Airport Extreme card. The two are not interchangable. Hopefully the G5 doesn't need an adapter card like the old iMacs do. First place to check is the documentation that came with your computer (printed or the Help menu.

802.11b, 802.11g, Bluetooth and 2.4Ghz wireless phones all use the same block of frequencies.
