I've been using an Edirol (Roland) UA-20 for a few weeks now (early eMac 1GHz under 10.2.8) with Sound Studio, which came with the machine. So far, it's been working great: stereo low-noise 44.1 KHz converters at either 16 or 24 bits, switch-selectable line/mic/guitar input, independent headphone outputs w/volume control, and MIDI In/Out as well. The UA-20 can be had for $150, which is quite a bit more than the iMic, but if you're lucky, you get what you pay for. YMMV
Think I'll give Cacaphony, though - thanks, Mark, for the suggestion.
