The cheapest good computing platform is a PC (NOT a laptop!) with an older processor and enough memory (e.g., around 256 Meg) running Linux. However, it isn't really a turnkey operation like a Mac. If you don't like reading anything and just want to monkey around, you will be frustrated. If you can keep hands off der blinkenlights, then you could probably use that system pretty much forever (so long as you use an older version of Linux and never think about upgrading).
The trap that people fall into when they try computing on the cheap is that they still want to run all the latest whippy stuff. Turns out that usually doesn't work, because the newest software has "enhanced features" (read: "bloat") that requires faster larger hardware. Of course there are local exceptions, but overall, if you have a five year old box, expect to run at least three year old software.
Just one more opinion to throw in the tank....
