Actually, while I'm babbling along, can anyone tell me what kind
of language would be really good to write my own email client with?

If you want to write for the Mac, Objective C is the only realistic choice, I think. If you want to write for a variety of platforms, Java might be a better choice. I've been meaning to try Objective C, but I'm having some ... issues ... with the Xcode development package. Anyway, the entire development package is free from Apple. I forget if you have to register as a developer to get it, but that isn't onerous at all. Just be sure you install the newest version.
