Hello Bryce.
I bypassed Jaguar and installed Panther a couple months ago.

Still need to figure out Safari as I prefer IE 5.2 for web browsing,
What's to figure out? Well, I have Safari 1.2.4 and I learned NOT to open it first thing. I just had to reformat the hard drive and then reinstall OS X Panther a second time. Then, when I installed Panther, I first opened Internet Explorer 5.2 to import my Favorites from Internet Explorer 5.1 under OS 9.2.2. After that, the FIRST time Safari opened, it automatically grabbed all the IE Favorites in put them into the Bookmarks. If you do not go through this process, you import each Favorite item individually, or you have to find some utility to bring then all in together. I went through the Safari preferences to make some settings. Safari became the #1 browser immediately. I use IE only to double check things if Safari seems to have a problem. Usually IE has the same problem too.
I use Classic 9 Powermail for e-mail,
I do not know anything about Powermail. I imported all my old mail folders and addresses from Outlook Express as counseled by Pogue's Panther book. I then ran both OE in Classic and Mail for a couple days, keeping mail on the server through preferences in both mail clients. This is just to verify that Mail would do the job. I quit using OE very quickly. The only issue I have with Mail is that when I work with an e-list digest, such as with this iMac list, the digest window closes when I hit Reply and I have to reopen the digest to keep going.
and still use Appleworks 6 for writings.
Apple's web site has the free download update to make AW 6 work in OS X.
Also received a copy of Panther for Christmas from a well meaning neice who figured I should move into the modern age of Macintosh. Once I know the ins and outs of 10.2 may install Panther.
Smart lady, that niece. Why wait? There is no point. Panther is better. Pogue's Panther book is a complete rewrite. From my readings on these lists, I can remember seeing no good reason to stay with Jaguar.
Some early on quick notations... the laptop starts up faster from turned off stage, if a program messes up, its usually Internet Exploder and when people send me attachments, although I've instructed the programs where to dump said attachments
In Internet Explorer 5.2, go to Preferences under Explorer in the menu bar. Click the arrow by Receiving Files to make it point downward. Click on Download Options. There you can set the Download Folder and then set a choice to have all downloads go to it. Perhaps you have things set to use download location from appropriate helpers. And while you are in Preferences, run through the other settings that you may want to control.
Now back to Safari. Some experts say that Safari is more secure than IE, at least in terms of no having holes left open deliberately by Microsoft for naive reasons of convenience. In Safari 1.2.4, I specified the Download Folder in the General panel of the Safari Preferences.
Enjoy,
Al Poulin
