Ok, iMac booted, and after I let it sit for about 1 minute, I get a small
blue icon that looks like a folder alternately flashing a question mark and
a MacOS symbol. As far as I know, that means it can't find a bootable disk
(HD may be shot) so I inserted a MacOS cd and rebooted.
Same thing. I also tried holding down the C key, same thing. Any more ideas?
zap the PRAM
Hold down the Command-Option-P-R keys right after you hit the power
button. Continue to hold them until you get the startup bong again.
Continue to hold them until you have heard that bong a total of 3 times.
Then see if it still doesn't see the hard drive. Be sure to give it
another minute of flashing the folder icon before deciding that it really
isn't going to see the hard drive.
If not, reboot again, this time, hold down Option (with a bootable CD in
the internal drive). Continue to hold Option until you get the Startup
Choice menu (don't know what it is really called, but you will get a set
of icons, one for each bootable device detected). Select the hard drive
if it is there, if not, select the CD, if that isn't there, AND you know
that the CD is bootable, then you further problems. You may have to open
the iMac and verify that the IDE cable is connected properly to the
drives.

Same thing happened to me with a Tangerine iMac. Flashing icon, etc. I did all the recommended things, but it did start one time from the CD, so I formatted the HD, and when I was installing the upgrade to 9.2.2, the screen went black, never to light up again. Turned out that it was a flaky power supply.
