Direct from the product manager: DO NOT put anything heavy on top of the Mac Mini. Doing so would probably damage the optical drive.

I was just contemplating the fact that the Mini is smaller than the smallest drive in my external stack -- so it would go on top. But then I couldn't reach the cd slot. :\
OTOH, given it's weight, it would do OK in a duct-tape sling below my monitor...
