Looks like I need a new hard drive for my G3 iMac DV (the 700-mh one).

Three are so many HDs out there. Can anyone tell me what kind(s) will be
compatible? How big is too big? etc.

If you are talking about replacing the internal hard drive, I suggest a Western Digital 120GB SE with 8MB cache and 7200rpm drive speed.

This is exactly what I put in my G3 iMac/700 a year ago, and it's been flawless and QUIET ever since. MUCH faster and less noisy than the stock drive.

Note that your machine can't "see" any drives larger than 137GB. That is to say they will show up, but only the first 137GB can be formatted and the rest will be ignored. So don't waste your money on a 200GB.

Firewire drives, incidentally, can be any size as long as the external case supports it. I have a 200GB external drive hooked up and it works fine (no-fan case ... can you tell I a nut about quiet?).
