For Mac OS 9 --
Use MT-NewsWatcher 3.1 for the text-based newsgroups. It's free, but doesn't support yEnc, so it's very limited for binary newsgroups.
Use Thoth for the binary newsgroups. It's supports yEnc well, but is very crashy. It's been withdrawn from the "market" (newsgroup google in c.s.m.comm for details on Brian Clark's latest temper fit), but is available if you ask. :)
Rosetta is the best decoder, but it was also withdrawn via the same temper fit.
For Mac OS X --
The latest MT-NewsWatcherX works quite well, and is under active development. It even supports yEnc. There are also a number of new newsreaders entering the market -- search for 'em on VersionTracker.
