Just a note after being out of the loop for a while here. Many of you generously offered advice and support with my CRT iMac 400 DV recently. The symptoms are: 1) after a half hour of inactivity, I get the "You need to restart your computer. . ." warning message, and 2) I can get nothing out of the firewire ports. These are likely unrelated, as the firewire ports have been on the blink ever since I changed out my DOA hard drive and loaded OS X two years ago. The crashing problem only began a few weeks ago. One of you fixed me up with a take-apart manual for this and it greatly simplified my surgery. My guess (hope?) was that the hard drive was beginning to fail, even though it is, as I stated earlier, only two years old. Well, the long and the short of it is that changing the Samsung 40 gig HD with a new 80 gig Seagate HD did nothing to fix the crashing problem. Same ol' same ol'. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, because while loading up the new HD with an OS, I slapped the old HD in a firewire enclosure and it ran fine, no crashing at all, even after hours of being left on. Any ideas what could cause the problems I'm experiencing here, folks? FWIW while I had the thing apart, I tried re-seating the FW ports onto the mobo. They weren't particularly loose, though. No change here, either. I fear that my old faithful iMac is nearing it's useful end. Too bad, the picture is still great. I figured it would be the first to go. . . Thanks in advance.
