Based on the feedback of others on this list, let me qualify this suggestion
by saying I am in NO WAY an expert on this...... But I did previously use
the 2-Wire DSL modem through BellSouth.  If I remember correctly, this modem
has a router (and firewall) built into it.  I ran a wired network back then
and what worked best for me was a hub/switch (not another router) connected
to the 2-Wire to distribute the connection.
I might also add that I left BellSouth DSL because they have a strange
attitude toward Mac users.  After a connection problem one day (only
Internet Explorer would connect....Apple Mail and Safari would not....they
said that my OS was corrupted and 'un-supported') I switched over to
Adelphia Cable and experience no more connection problems.
