Two caveats to that. 

If they are faster spec drives then your Mac uses, then you will not get 
the faster speed. They will still work, but you will only get the max 
speed your Mac supports. (ATA/IDE drives come in different thruput 
speeds, all are fully interchangable, but all only get the speed of the 
slowest point in the setup. So a Mac that uses ATA/33 will not get 
ATA/100 speeds if you put an ATA/100 drive in it).

The other issue is, depending on the Mac, it may not be able to see 
drives over a certain size. If you have an earlier Mac, and you put a 200 
GB drive in it, it may simply not been seen at all (or possibly be seen, 
but not see the full 200 GB). So make sure before you buy a drive, you 
check what the max size your Mac can use, and don't bother getting larger 
then that.
