Usually a broken dialtone means you have a message waiting. If your iMac is having troubles realizing the interupted dialtone is in fact a dialtone, then turn off the "wait for dialtone" option in the modem settings. When you do this, the iMac will seize the line, pause for just a moment, and then start dialing, regardless of what it finds on the line (this means it won't realize you are talking on the phone if you use the same line for voice calls). If it isn't having a problem recognizing the dialtone, but rather your phone service won't let you dial until the dialtone is steady, and the iMac is starting too soon... then just add a comma or two before the phone number to dial.
