I might add that this only applies to AppleWorks 5 (the communications
feature was removed from AppleWorks 6). You can also use ZTerm to type
in modem commands (<http://homepage.mac.com/dalverson/zterm/>; both OS X
and Classic versions are available). Anyway, the commands you'd type
are:

AT&F [hit Return, then wait for "OK"]
ATZ  [hit Return]

Shutting the iMac down (*not* restarting), then starting up again after
waiting about a minute, will also reset the modem.
