Here's the info you're looking for, but you're not going to like it:
1. There is no such thing as a USB to FW bridge. The two are fundamentally incompatible.
2. USB 1 *will not* work with the iPod as far as I can find out. It would be PAINFULLY slow even if it did.
You need a Mac (or a PC I suppose) with a FW port. It's really just that simple.
I remember you saying in an earlier post that you are of limited means and can't afford to upgrade your iMac with a Sonnet HARMONi card.
My suggestion to you would then be that you should probably sell the iMac you have and, together with some savings, get a Mac mini (particularly if any show up refurbished from Apple at some point). You're almost certainly in need of a new computer by now anyway, and for the price you can hardly go wrong. Your iPod will just be the first of many new things you'll be able to do with it.
