Of course, you must use the file erasure program while the file actually exists, since "deleting" it destroys the link between where the file's segments are and the directory that is keeping that information. Some of these programs can also operate on "empty" disk sectors left behind after file "deletions", since we all should know that "empty" is not really even true for a pristine disk, given that minimally there is a test pattern laid down during post-manufacture testing.

The "overwrite N times" programs assume that the location of the file on the disk remains fixed. With a journaled filesystem, that doesn't have to be true. I wonder if someone that knows how the journaling in HFS+ works can comment?
