Hi Jon 

I recently had a situation were I had a piece of ram
go bad in my g4 fp, My 9 partition was still working
were as my X partition kept degrading in performance
until all it would do is boot to open firmware (even
after typing mac-boot as you described). As it turned
out, some how X lost its system file (???) Very
strange , Eventhough you mentioned 9 didn't work
either still just an Idea. Hope it sorts out soon.
