Many people that have used news for a long time don't like Google Groups except as an archive. Your mileage and all that.
I use MT-Newswatcher since the demise of Thoth, and it is pretty swell. http://www.smfr.org/mtnw/ . I've seen some sneering about how antiquated it is, but it seems to have all the features I want. I don't know if it's open source or not. It is free, but donations are accepted.
