Waking from sleep invokes screen saver

My G4 iMac has started doing this. When I wake it from sleep, the 
desktop flashes on briefly and then the screen goes dark. Moving the 
mouse flashes the Computer Name screen saver and then the desktop 
appears. In the Deskto & Screen Saver Control Panel I have the Start 
Screen Saver set to Never. Any idea as to what to check? Repairing 
permissions and running the cron scripts don't seem to help.
