I have an eMac running 10.3.8 and want to convert some old VHS and some camcorder stuff onto DVD. How can I capture this on my Mac ready to burn to DVD.
You don't. At least, not that directly you don't.
You can buy a Canopus ADC-1000 and hook your VCR to one and and your eMac to the other and convert your VHS et al into DV format, which iMovie or other programs can accept and edit (add titles, new sound, what have you) and THEN pass that file on to iDVD, which (after adding menus et al) will burn you a lovely DVD. There are other programs that can capture the DV signal, edit the file and spit out a DVD-burnable image, but none as easy/elegant as iMovie/iDVD in combo.
OR
You can buy a camcorder such as the Canon Z100 that has "analog passthrough" inputs -- hook your VCR to the camera and the camera to the eMac with iMovie open etc as above.
OR
You can go to Costco and buy the $199 Lite-On LVW-5005 DVD recorder. Plug VCR into it, insert disk, press play on VCR and record on DVR, and two hours later you have a DVD.
