Most likely, it is due to the fact that the old iMacs top out at 6MB of
VRAM and have a craptacular video chip. With Tiger, they were supposed
to redo the Quartz engine to make better use of pci graphics cards an
sub-16MB cards. I'd guess that this requires at least 8MB of VRAM
minimum. Incidentally, the only stock-config Macs that would not meet
that criteria also have no firewire port. So. it is easier from a
marketing standpoint to simply point out the part of that equation
people are most likely to understand. If I'm right about the video,
then Xpostfacto may not be able to get Tiger running on the
old-schoolers at all.

Perhaps it has less to do with needing the Firewire port, and more to
do with the motherboard which, incidentally, has a built-in Firewire
port?
