First, I can't believe you are up to 5 Iomega units, all with problems, and you haven't just demanded your money back on the last, and moved onto another brand. I've have stopped trying with Iomega after the first two failed.
Second, make sure you are plugging the drive in directly to the Mac. Do NOT connect it via a USB Hub, or the keyboard. It will likely fail. I don't know why, but so far every USB hard drive and CD Drive I've connected to an iMac is unreliable at best when passed thru a hub. All work (sort of) when connected directly to the iMac. Third, I assume you have downloaded and installed any Iomega drivers for OS 8.x. I see they have drives on their web site that are supposed to be for 8.x. I assume you have also checked their web site for support info on the mac not seeing the drive (I see there is a listing for Toast not seeing the drive). Forth, I assume you have also downloaded and installed any Apple updates or drivers for USB support under 8.6. I don't know what all their is (I'll leave that up to you to read thru their support pages), but I know there is at least a USB Mass Storage update for 8.6 that may pertain to using CDRW drives. Fifth, does the drive get as far as letting you burn discs? Does it fail during the burn? USB 1.x will max out at 4x burning, if you go over that, you will likely fail to burn (even with "safe burn" or other buffer underrun protection). You *may* be able to push it to 6x IF you have nothing else going on the bus, and are using a good reliable drive, reliable discs, have buffer underrun protection, and the alignment of the planets is correct. Anything over 6x on USB 1.x will simply fail, don't bother trying it unless you are having a house party soon and need a good supply of drink coasters. -chris <http://www.mythtech.net> -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
