I have a Mac G4 quicksilver that I'm still running OS 9 on. There is an
early version of X on it - I think 10.1... - but I never boot it up in X as
I'd had trouble in the past going back and forth between 9 and X.
I've been cleaning up my hard drive and backing everything up. Ran Norton
(SystemWorks 2) Disk Doctor.
Okay, first problem right there. Before you do ANYTHING else, run the Norton Installer and ask it to UNINSTALL all traces of Norton from your hard drive.
You *really really* do not want any TRACE of a Symantec product on any system running OS X.
So what to do now?
Is there another utility I should use to defrag in OS 9?
Should I go ahead and install X and then try to defrag with X installed?
My suggestion would be to clone the entire drive onto an external, check to make sure it boots/works right, then WIPE the original drive and restore back. Voila, you've defragged.
Can we upgrade hubby's Tiger to a family pack or do I have to buy another
one at full price?
First of all, let me say how much I admire your strong ethical position on this. You're likely to get a lot of cretinous suggestions from others on this list to just pirate the Tiger since Apple didn't force the nightmare of "activation" on us, but as you've already realised, that sort of behaviour/attitude is exactly what will FORCE Apple to eventually include activation or similarly odious copy protection into Mac OS X, so it's a good idea to reward good behaviour and buy what you need.
To answer your question, I think the best answer would be to simply call Apple and ask them. They may be able to arrange an "upgrade" over the phone. If you get a "no way, can't do it" type answer, ask politely to be moved up the ranks -- there's got to be SOME way of getting this done without having to buy a complete second copy!
