Assuming you're already running some flavour or other of OS X... 1. Put your 40Gb (or whichever new drive you'll use) drive back in the external enclosure. Reformat it. 2. Use your regular tools to ensure that your current system is in good shape, repair permissions, etc. 3. Clone your current system to the blank external using the wonderful Carbon Copy Cloner (freeware from www.bombich.com). 4. Go watch some TV, do the dishes, mow the lawn, learn to paint watercolour landscapes, etc. 5. Check that you can boot up from the external drive fine, by making it your start up drive in System Preferences. 6. If all is okay, physically swap the drives over, making sure you check that the jumper switches are in the right position (Master, IIRC) on the new drive. 7. Start up your newly-roomy iMac and enjoy. 8. Wonder if that spare screw you've just found is a crucial component... Hope this helps!
