OK, since I've confessed I don't 'get' OS X, I might as well put this silly question out there...

I've downloaded and installed Firefox and Thunderbird (and a couple other apps). Why do they show up on the desktop with icons that look like hard drives? (Disk images?) What do I do with those? Can I move them somewhere? Delete them? Is that icon the actual app? I'm confused about installing... sometimes there's no choice where to put something. Why don't they just install to the apps folder?

Please explain.
