The 8 gig limitation applies only to G3/333 and earlier OS X-capable models,
and only on those that have had the original hard drive replaced with one
larger than 8 gig. There is a list of machines that it applies to in
another post on this topic. Your G3/400 should be just fine with installing
X without any partitioning, provided you have enough disc space available.

For those who do have machines that require partitioning, it is really a
matter of personal preference as to whether to have 9 and X on separate
partitions. My personal preference was to have them both on one partition,
as I seemed to frequently run out of disc space when they were divided into
two smaller partitions. The only advantage I found in keeping them separate
was if I had to reinstall one or the other, one remained intact. But, as I
mentioned, I kept running out of room on my OS X partition from cache files,
updates and such.
