Um... ok, I have to disagree with you here... but in a manner that
SUPPORTS your statement :-)

The Apple II line is almost 20 years out from dead. So the time frame is
not going to be "within the next decade", more like within two decades.
And, the Apple II series is far from scarce. Anyone that wants one can
find one with little or no effort (if you can't, then you aren't looking
very hard). And they can be had for cheap if not free.

Sure, the Apple II is rare, and the II+ is becoming such... but the IIe,
IIc, and IIgs are widely available. And, there are emulators for them
that run far faster then the machines ever did. And those emulators are
available for multiple OSes and processors (and all run equally fast).

So going off your Apple II analogy for people who need to be able to run
non current OS versions needing to buy their machine within the next 10
years... I beg to differ... I'd say they had better start looking for
backup machines in the next 20 years, or plan to move to what will
probably be an available much faster emulator running on whatever the
current processors are 20 years from now.

In other words... just like you try to point out... people should hold
off their panic. If they have a need for an ultra fast PPC right now,
then sure, buy one right now... but if you are buying it to hedge your
bets on needing it in the future after they have been dropped... you are
wasting your money. Once they are discontinued the price will only drop
over the years. And people will find their needs change over the years as
well. Why buy it before you actually need it when there is a good chance
when you need it you can get it cheaper or find that you didn't need it
at all.
