Actually, he was upset when I got him the iMac, because it only had a 15" screen, so I simply plugged it in to his 19" CRT, and he was happy again. I showed him how to do the same with his 12" iBook, but he refuses. He's also obsessed with the G5 iMacs. He tends to go in shifts, iMacs for a few weeks, then powermacs, then iBooks. Of course, he could simply buy a great mac mini for all he's ever wanted to do and more, but that would make too much sense. Gentle ways of reminding him he doesn't need it cause fights. He hates it when I ask him what he plans to use the computer for. to date he has the following computers that go completely unused taking up space in his computer room: Apple ][c, Mac IIsi, Powermac 7100/66, powerbook 5300, compaq laptop 300 mHz, compaq laptop 1.9 GHz, and now the 800 mHz iBook G4 I keep trying to tell him that for what he is trying to do, his iMac is more than enough, but he doesn't seem too listen. As for the clutter freak thing, you have no idea. I rarely work on his computers anymore because his desk is covered under a foot and a half of papers, magazines, newspapers, junk etc. I can't even do anything at his desk because every time I so much as move the mouse a pile of crap falls down on me, and you can't even see the floor anymore.
As for programs, any cheap, low power requirement specific examples?

Not a technical problem, per say, but a problem none the less...

Just thoughts:
Have him make a list of things he wants in a computer... what it should run, quality of monitor ,etc Have him narrow it down to exactly what he wants. Have him shop according to what he's looking for and what his budget allows... not what he happens to find.

Find gentle ways to remind him not to buy just for the sake of buying... I tend to do this myself sometimes - the impulse to buy because it's 'such a bargain' sometimes overcomes the common sense of 'do i NEED that'? I may shop in discount stores, thrift stores, garage sales (and my favorite - craigslist), but just because I buy second hand, doesn't mean I'm always making wise buying choices.

Whenever he's at your house, have the TV on with 'Clean Sweep' or 'Mission Organization' - though he may not be a clutter freak, the tips on that show, and the process of letting go of stuff you're not using can be helpful and inspriring. One good rule of thumb - if you're going to buy something new, you must get rid of something, too. Encourage him to sell the equipment he's not using, or donate it.

I like the previous suggestion of introducing him to less harmful addictive behaviour... online games, freeware.

Good luck. Hang in there.
