Brian,

Here is my advice to turn his addiction against him. :) Set him up with an eBay SELLER account. Get him addicted to selling his crap on eBay. :) After he gets the rush of doing that a few times, you might be able to get him to sell all the stuff that falls on you when you try to work at his desk.

An alternative if that doesn't work is to get him interested in Linux. If you can get him intrigued enough by the experience of installing some variety of Linux on his Compaq, you could trick him into trying to get it working on his other computers. Although, I like playing with Linux, I can assure you it is a bottomless pit for wasted time and may eat up enough of his time that he will forget about eBay. Of course, this could end up backfiring into him buying more computers to try and find one that Linux will install on without any hardware problems, but if you can get him to buy into the mentality of "winning the victory" of getting a perfectly working install that does everything he wants to do, you would be setting up against a mostly unreachable task that would consume him until he gives up. :)

Not that I'm advocating manipulation, but I struggle with the tendency as well, so I know the trick is to find things to keep oneself occupied enough to avoid eBay and such.

Lastly, would be to tap into another of his interests, if he has any, and find him some free software on macupdate.com or versiontracker.com that he can use to pursue those interests.

Peace,
Todd
