i've never had an external hard drive before.
any tips to using one to full advantage?

Cool...figured that was the case. You just have to make sure the
drive you order/buy has a firewire port. Some of the lower end
external drives --particulary Western Digital--have started having USB
ports only--I almost walked out of the store with one a few months
ago.
