I want to buy an external hard drive for my Imac (flat panel, 15",
700,OSX 10.8).

Since I don't have USB 2.0, can I still purchase a hard drive with a
USB 2.0 Interface??

Well, you CAN ... but you really don't want to, since it will operate at USB 1.1 speed and that will be an unpleasant (and unbootable) experience.

You've got perfectly good Firewire plugs on that machine, why not simply buy a drive (or an enclosure) that uses FW instead? Yes it's slightly more, but it works.

Better still, find a nice enclosure (hint: pcmicrostore.com) that has both USB2 and FW, then find a nice inexpensive drive (hint: newegg.com) and put them together yourself. It's easy and could save you quite a bundle.
