Elizabeth,
The sure-fire way to solve this problem is to startup the iMac from an
external drive, such as a 2 partition firewire drive that has a bootable
partition with NetRestore installed on it, and a second partition with a
clean install of a Mac OS, such as Panther or Tiger. Then you start up the
iMac by holding down the Option key after the chime and choose the partition
on the external drive that has the NetRestore on it. Once it starts from
that partition, you can launch NetRestore and choose the other partition as
the configuration and the iMac as the target.

This is how we image computers at our school all the time. NetRestore is a
free download from bombich.com

If you want to try this and you want me to walk you through it, I will give
you my phone number so you can call me. I'd be glad to help. Your machine is
worth saving. The 700 was a great workhorse.

Cheers,
John
