Hi!
I have tried to start up the computer from an external drive and the
Open Firmware password prevents me from booting from another CD/
drive. I think this computer was used in a school/library because
it's locked down pretty well. If I can get past the Open Firmware
password, I could boot from an external source. Any ideas?

The sure-fire way to solve this problem is to startup the iMac from an
external drive, such as a 2 partition firewire drive that has a
bootable
partition with NetRestore installed on it, and a second partition
with a
clean install of a Mac OS, such as Panther or Tiger. Then you start
up the
iMac by holding down the Option key after the chime and choose the
partition
on the external drive that has the NetRestore on it. Once it starts
from
that partition, you can launch NetRestore and choose the other
partition as
the configuration and the iMac as the target.
This is how we image computers at our school all the time.
NetRestore is a
free download from bombich.com

machine is
worth saving. The 700 was a great workhorse.

Subject: Update on iMac Password issue
Well, I took all of the suggestions and tried them. (Thank you!)
Unfortunately, I could not get into the iMac whatsoever (booting by
CD didn't work, PRAM stuff didn't work, etc.) So now, unless anyone
has any other suggestions on how to unlock this iMac, I have a 700
mhz paperweight. Good thing it was free, huh?
I might part it out if anyone's interested or send it along to
someone else if they'd like to take a crack at it!
