Hi Andrew,
Check your settings for energy saver in System Prefs and make sure you
have the display set to sleep, too.
I got a uniriser stand for my iMac which seems to help with air
circualtion and have a small rotating fan sitting about 2 feet from the
iMac and always have it turned on when the computer is not sleeping.
