Wanting to do OSX 10.4 right, I've FINALLY decided that I've read
enough
take-apart manuals and lurked around here long enough for some
reassurance that I can do the install of a replacement hard drive in my
grape iMacDV 400 MHz slot loader.
Best Buy has this model on sale this week, $34.99 after $60.00 in
rebates:

So, is this the one?
I put that same drive in my 500 MHz snow iMac - did it myself from
online instructions (I think from www.xlr8yourmac.com/) - and it made
EVERYTHING about the computer better than with the stock drive - which
I think was also a Seagate, actually. Faster, quieter (the old one
really whined), obviously more room, not hotter that I could tell; I
also have it on a UniRiser (by contourdesign.com), which raises it more
to eye level and gives it more air circulation.
Since then I've installed/switched out probably a dozen or more hard
drives on various G3 iMac models at the school where I teach, and I've
done two G4 iMacs here at home. Just took trying it once to gain some
confidence. The Seagate is a good choice, but I like Maxtors and
Deskstars all right, too. Avoid Western Digitals and Quantum
Fireballs, IMO.
