What I did was I added an external firewire drive. Why mess with
taking out the old drive? With an external drive you don't have to
worry about overheating. Put OS X on it and boot from it to benefit
from a faster drive. Use the internal drive for OS 9 and the
external drive for OS X, boot from either. Enjoy both operating
systems.
