Here's what I predict for October 12.
I predict the announcement of agreements with the TV studios for
distribution of TV content from a new iTunes "Multimedia" Store. I
predict new hardware to go along with this - a new airport express type
box with video out. And a new Mac Mini-like device with a remote
control and with an iPod dock on the top of it.
The distribution system is already in place:
- iTunes plays videos
- AAC (and thereby QuickTime) supports copy protection
- the notion of podcasts (that is, RSS feeds with enclosures) works for
any media type - video or audio
- currently all iTunes Music Store-based podcasts are free, but there's
no reason they couldn't charge for them.
Think about it - the ability to subscribe to TV shows in the iTunes
Multimedia Store, and watch them on your Mac, on a TV with the new
Airport box, on a TV with the new video-enabled iPod, burn them to DVD
with iDVD.
Nobody does this. Jobs would be seen as a trailblazer, which we all
know he loves.
This is not a TiVo-like device. It's a subscription service that uses
the mechanisms they already have in place. I think it would be a
winner. I'd cancel my cable and TiVo services and buy a Mac mini.
