Nothing to do with UNIX. The protocol here is AppleTalk, and OSX can also speak that.

I'm sorry - I haven't been following this thread. Just to clarify a couple of Are's replies:

There are a number of known incompatibilities between AFP/AT (Apple Filing Protocol over AppleTalk) on OS 8/9 and OS X. Apple resolved this issue by totally removing AFP/AT out of Tiger. So... You need to use AFP/IP (AFP over IP) on all involved machines.

Another OS 9 vs OS X issue is the machine's name. Sometimes if there are any special characters or spaces in the broadcasted name, the machines cannot talk.
