I purchased a new copy of Photoshop Elements 3 some eight weeks ago.
The program encountered "errors" when loading on to my
Macintosh G3 iBook. 800 Mhz G3, 640 MB Ram with Panther (10.3.9)
as the operating system. Wanted to learn to do some form of
digital editing
to enhance my knowledge base.
As the program would not load
located the support knowledge base on Adobe's web site. Went
through the
entire list, trying everything to no avail. Even tried a new user
account, as well as reinstalling the system software from scratch. The
program would still not load! The computer met all of the published
criteria for the software.
I think we are seeing a source of (some) of your repeated frustration
with computers -- you are WAY overreacting to a faulty install and
potentially doing some damage to your system in the process. It's a
TERRIBLE idea to reinstall the system software over and over.
When software that comes on a CD will not install properly, it is
prudent and wise to do the following:
1. Repair permissions
2. Attempt the install from a new user (as you did).
Beyond that, a repeatable failure to install indicates either that
the CD is scratched and/or defective, or the CD drive is going (or
needs cleaning). Very common. I'm not sure why neither you nor Adobe
seem to have considered this possibility.
Took the computer to my long-time dealer along with the software.
(snipped dealer's comments)
You really, REALLY need to find a new dealer. That's all I'll say
about that..
Do I replace the G3 iBook for the sake of one program?
No, particularly when there is plenty of evidence that the program
will run just fine on your machine if installed properly -- it says
so right on the box!
The company would not take
the G3 on trade, rather on consignment. Seems they are dogs on the
market.
Again, see my comments re: your dealer.
Now being told due to my age and increasing
lack of physical mobility the work is being turned over to a much
younger, more mobile and more in tune with the real world person.
While not meaning to seem callous, this is perfectly normal behaviour
for companies today. They do not value experience gleaned from "old
paradigms." I can relate to your problem -- just as I was graduating
from Journalism School, Aldus brought out Pagemaker. I saw a demo and
realised with great horror that nearly EVERYTHING I had spent the
last four years learning to do -- creating halftones, shooting for
print, counting m-spaces, memorising typesetting codes -- was USELESS
and I had to start over. Luckily, I was young then. :)
So had my shop check over the G3 iBook. One of the memory chips which
they had installed when I purchased the iBook new, had gone bad.
Please see my previous comments regarding this dealer. I work in a
repair facility. I have yet to see RAM chips "go bad" unless obvious
abuse (such as handling them while rubbing one's feet on the carpet,
or soaking them in liquid et al) is indicated. While it was nice of
them to replace the chip free, it was very shoddy of them to have
sold you defective RAM in the first place!
Then too is this a quirk of Adobe?
No -- as you noted, a colleague with a nearly identical (processor-
wise) machine had no issues installing the program. The problem is
almost certainly some issue with your CD reader, probably just needs
the lens cleaned.
Cheers
Chas
