(Deliberately cross-posted) Entitled Perplexed!
I purchased a new copy of Photoshop Elements 3 some eight weeks ago. The program encountered "errors" when loading on to my Macintosh G3 iBook. 800 Mhz G3, 640 MB Ram with Panther (10.3.9) as the operating system. Wanted to learn to do some form of digital editing to enhance my knowledge base. As the program would not load located the support knowledge base on Adobe's web site. Went through the entire list, trying everything to no avail. Even tried a new user account, as well as reinstalling the system software from scratch. The program would still not load! The computer met all of the published criteria for the software. Spoke with the help desk at Adobe, after many telephone calls. They suggested perhaps the computer itself might be at fault. The help desk did note any small glitch or problem within the computer would be revealed by the software, even if other non-Adobe programs seemed to work satisfactorily. Took the computer to my long-time dealer along with the software. Nary a G3 iBook in sight, "it's too old, you need a newer machine!" The program installed just fine on the G4 laptops in stock. Do I replace the G3 iBook for the sake of one program? The iBook is worth about C$400.00 on a trade-in even with Apple Care through the end of 2006. A new G4 iBook is C$1600.00 plus tax. The company would not take the G3 on trade, rather on consignment. Seems they are dogs on the market. Me, have been waiting to see what the new chip design for Apple would bring if I was to upgrade later. And too in my case have lost my two different contracts and hence most of my outside work (am on a long-term disability pension) for extra money. The reason I went from PC Windows to Macs 14 years ago was to do contract journalism in transportation. Now being told due to my age and increasing lack of physical mobility the work is being turned over to a much younger, more mobile and more in tune with the real world person. Both contracts due to expire in June 2006 state I can be turfed out on eight and nine months notice respectively. I have decided to not fight the termination notices, at age 60 it just isn't worth the various problems I'd face. So had my shop check over the G3 iBook. One of the memory chips which they had installed when I purchased the iBook new, had gone bad. It was replaced, no charge. The program would still not load! Am well and truly confused and perplexed. One friend has a 12" G3 iBook, the program loads on that machine without a problem and it has less memory! Have no intention of replacing the iBook; with loss of contracts, the money is not going to be there in the future. Contracts for me in my field at my age simply don't exist. As noted had thought of upgradingwhen the new chipsets arrive. However being cautious was going to wait and and see if any glitches developed in the new computers so was figured two maybe three years down the road, not now. Then too is this a quirk of Adobe? What other less intensive programs exist? Am not a digital photography person, still the traditional film for me. Had thought maybe having digital imagery for doing contracts would've helped however in the interim the contract termination notices arrived so in a way the long-term concern is redundant. Anybody on list have any ideas though? This has me really confused. The G3 iBook continues to function with nary a visible problem. A friend has since purchased the Photoshop Elements 3 from me for less than I paid for same; now there is a new version PS Elements 4 out on the market.
