Beyond that, a repeatable failure to install indicates either that
the CD is scratched and/or defective, or the CD drive is going (or
needs cleaning). Very common. I'm not sure why neither you nor Adobe
seem to have considered this possibility.

Should've added...am on my third CD drive as well.

Ah, well I'm glad to see I was right ... the problem centers on your CD drive.

It occurs to me that if your iBook has Firewire, it would probably be a very inexpensive proposition for you to obtain another combo drive and put it in a Firewire case. This would solve the problem of the faulty Sony drive as well as play DVDs.

I'd be happy to get the ball rolling by DONATING to you a Firewire case capable of holding a 5.25" IDE drive such as a CD-RW or Combo drive. Just send me an email off-list and give me a few days to get it in the post (I only have time to mail things on the weekend) and it's yours if you need it. Perhaps some other kind list member even has a CD-RW or Combo drive "lying around" they'd like to sell for cheap or donate to you. Can't hurt to ask! :)

Again, see my comments re: your dealer.

The other dealers in the area are much much worse.
This is Canada and things are somewhat different than perhaps
the uSA. There are not a plethora of Mac dealers.

I seem to recall you saying that you live in a more remote part of that fine country than, say, the big metropolitan centers I have visited like Montreal, Vancouver and Victoria. If I'm remembering right, then I can understand why you have a limited choice of Mac dealers.

I remember asking you once if there was a Mac User Group in your area, but I don't recall a reply to that. Do you have one? You can check Apple's web site to help you determine this.

If you're not sure, here's a list of the Canadian MUGs that Apple is aware of:
<http://appleusergroups.com/locator/find/locate.cgi?country=4>

I would think you would benefit greatly from a MUG if there is one in your area.

I might also suggest to you that it would be a good idea to find out which well-known online Mac dealers in the US are willing to ship to Canada. I would think most of them will do so, and despite the exchange rate, a good deal in the US might even save you money compared to the "native" Canadian cost!

And the general impression from me and one or two others is
all they care about is how much money you're planning on spending.

Yes, that's a big problem both up there and here. :)

The G5 was fine, the G3 iBook complained bitterly but after three or four
tries did accept the
program. Mind the hard drive was four gig short of being full..

Once again, we see the value in keeping a fair amount of free space "available" on any Mac running OS X.

The chap with the G5 suggested since Apple Canada won't help that I flog the
beast to the highest bidder and maybe go look for a used G4 Powerbook,
and just bite
my tongue on the cost.

That's one option, and a sensible one. I happen to love my refurb G4 iBook (1.2GHz w/768MB RAM) and might also suggest that option. Since your G3 iBook (that's what you have, right?) can still BOOT into OS 9, your machine does retain some value in the market that it otherwise wouldn't -- if you DO decide to sell it, try to find a buyer who specifically wants that ability -- you'll get more for it that way.

Wet RAM???

You wouldn't believe some of the things people do to their computers, but in that particular case I was referring to a young man who left town just before a hurricane. He left his iBook on his desk. His roof leaked a little and some water got into the open iBook. Time passed and the water seemed to be gone (from the keyboard, anyway). When he returned and started up the iBook, there was evidently still some water inside the machine. You can guess what happened.

We recovered the data on his drive and copied it into his new iBook.

Maybe I should return after this many years to say a Toshiba prehistoric
computer laptop?

Well, you know what we're likely to say to THAT. :)

However, if you can get one at low or no cost and your needs are basic (and you can somehow protect the machine from internet/email viruses), then I'd say "sure." Otherwise, I'd suggest sticking with Apple. They aren't perfect (and in your case, even "great" seems a huge stretch), but they're still better than anyone else.

Cheers
Chas
