Subject: Will this work?
I got a iMac slot-loading 350 G3 "Blue berry" this past Friday from
Ebay.
Has OS9.2 but is damn slow.
It only has 64mb of RAM.
Can I use OSX on it without upgrading RAM?
Nope. Won't even install with that little an amount of RAM.
Also will Ubuntu work well instead?
That's certainly a more viable option, but since RAM for that model
is ludicrously cheap, why not just upgrade the RAM and run OS X? A
spot check on dealram.com reveals that adding two 256MB modules in
there (tossing the original 64MB stick) would cost you around $45.
Keeping the 64MB stick and adding a 512MB stick would cost you less
than $60 (for a total of 576MB). Tossing the 64MB and adding (1)
256MB stick and (1) 512MB would run you roughly $76, and maxing it
out at 1GB (two 512MB sticks) would cost you around $110.
Seems like a VERY modest price to pay for substantial improvement in
performance. With such a slow processor, more RAM and a faster hard
drive can really make a HUGE difference when it comes to OS X. I ran
my G3/700 into the ground on 768MB of RAM and really loved that machine.
Cheers
Chas
